According to police, a mob beat a 29-year-old man to death after accusing him of entering a pandal where a religious ritual was taking place while inebriated.
The incident occurred near Durga Mandir in the Udham Singh Nagar district. The victim, Johny Sagar, remained semi-conscious on the road outside the pandal for nearly three hours, writhing in pain, according to police official DS Kunwar, who cited CCTV footage of the scene.
He was rushed to the district hospital after his plight attracted the attention of a few passers-by, where doctors pronounced him dead, he said. The victim was intoxicated, according to the police, and he got into an altercation with the people in the pandal, who then beat him and threw him out.
On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s wife, a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against unidentified persons, according to the police official. He added that CCTV footage is being investigated in order to locate the suspect.
