According to authorities, a man drove into a gathering of demonstrators protesting the shooting death of a Black man by US Marshals in Minneapolis, killing a woman and injuring three others. According to police, the driver, who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, allegedly crashed his car into a group of protesters soon before midnight.
“Protesters dragged the suspect from the vehicle and began striking the driver,” Minneapolis police said in a statement. “Officers arrived and took the driver into arrest.”
According to authorities, a woman was carried to the hospital in serious condition and died as a result of her injuries.
The vehicle’s driver was also taken to the hospital.
According to authorities, “preliminary inquiry shows that the driver’s usage of drugs or alcohol may have been a contributing role in this incident.”
The protesters were protesting the shooting murder of Winston Boogie Smith on June 3 by US Marshals who were attempting to apprehend him for firearms offenses.
Smith died just over a year after George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who was slain by police in Minneapolis while being apprehended.
Floyd’s death provoked worldwide protests against racial injustice and police violence after former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in April.
