After the team’s dominant victory over Australia in the Boxing Day Test on Tuesday, Indian players have been in a joyous mood. Spin spearhead Ravichandran Ashwin said that it was not easy for the team to lose regular skipper Virat Kohli, but stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane stood up to the challenge and led from the front.
In the Boxing Day Test, India secured an eight-wicket victory over Australia on Tuesday. In the longest format of the game, Rahane’s 12th century and the well-made fifty of Ravindra Jadeja had given India firm control in the second Test.
The best thing we did was just walk away from that Adelaide game and we said it was just one of those unfortunate days and it was certainly the fault of the batting unit. Most importantly, it was not easy to lose Virat, but the conversation we had around it and the team-building exercises we did through that process from Adelaide to Melbourne were very significant, and Jinks was very, very calm and balanced, which gave all of us the launch pad to go out there and express ourselves after that defeat, Ashwin said in a BCCI video.

For a while now, many of us have played and we have had some special wins, but if I had to choose one that would be extremely special, for a lot of reasons, it is this one. It’s not that easy this team minus Virat, the batting giant India has had over the past decade or so, and Jinks stood up and that’s one of the best cricketing knocks I’ve seen, he added.
It was also called a special victory by Cheteshwar Pujara, adding that it goes into his list of top five victories that he has been a part of.
I believe this is probably going to be one of the top five wins I’ve been part of, and the overseas wins are always special. We were only left with four bowlers in the way Jinks batted in the first innings, and also in the second innings, and also the way bowlers bowled after losing Umesh, but they bowled their hearts out. The guys just wanted to win. After the first loss, we were really hurt and now, Pujara said, the series is level.
Ravindra Jadeja said he wants the team to keep the momentum going. For us as a team, this is going to be a special win because we were one down. In the first game, we lost badly. So, I think we came here with a positive attitude and spirit and we played really good cricket as a team. Everyone looks in good form, batsmen are scoring runs, wickets are being taken by bowlers. Hopefully, the same momentum will continue, and hopefully, win the next match, Jadeja said.
With this win, the visitors have tied the four-match Test series 1-1. In addition, the win also meant that India moved a little closer to the World Test Championship finals.
