Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated his ally MK Stalin, whose DMK party appeared to be on track to beat the ruling AIADMK and the BJP in the Tamil Nadu elections.
Congratulations to Shri MK Stalin for the victory.
People of Tamil Nadu have voted for change and we will, under your leadership, prove to be a confident step in that direction.

With the DMK leading in 121 seats and its ally Congress in 16, Tamil Nadu appeared to be on the verge of forming a new government. The ruling AIADMK trailed with 80 seats in the 234-member assembly. A clear majority would be achieved if 118 is won.
Both Dravidian parties, the AIADMK, and the DMK went into the election without their stalwarts, J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi for the AIADMK and M Karunanidhi for the DMK, respectively.
Tamil Nadu was also the only bright spot for the Congress, as the DMK-led opposition alliance, of which it is a member, appeared to be in a position to defeat the AIADMK-BJP coalition. More defeats were recorded in other states, including West Bengal and Kerala, where Mr. Gandhi is an MP, highlighting the party’s dwindling electoral significance.
Despite the fact that victory roadshows and vehicle rallies were prohibited by the Election Commission, crowds of jubilant supporters of various parties could be seen celebrating in various locations, in violation of Covid rules. The triumphant drumbeats came against a background of massive, crowded protests – with most participants wearing no masks – held in the midst of the pandemic.
