Telecom industry grew by almost 2.5 million in October 2020

According to a recent survey, the ‘active’ subscriber base of the telecom industry grew by almost 2.5 million in October 2020 to hit around 961 million, and consumer additions benefited from the disappearing effect of SIM consolidation caused by tariff increase.
In its report crunching Trai’s telecom subscription numbers, ICICI Securities said the active subscribers of Bharti Airtel grew by about 3 million to hit almost 320 million in October 2020., “most of which was driven by total subscriber net adds, thus indicating improving quality of subscriber addition”.
In its historically poor circles of Maharashtra (0.7 million) and Gujarat, Bharti Airtel saw the highest addition of subscribers (0.5 million).
Active subscribers are measured on the basis of the Visitor Location Register Registered (VLR), a key metric that represents the number of active mobile network users.
“Industry-active subscriber base expanded by 2.5 million to 961 million. Subscriber addition has benefited from vanishing impact of SIM consolidation triggered from the tariff hike,” the report said.
Jio’s active subscribers rose 1.1 million to 319 million in October, according to the ICICI Securities’ survey.
It added that the number of active subscribers of Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) continued to fall, albeit at a lower rate; it dropped by 1.2 million in October 2020, resulting in an active user base of about 260 million. The overall subscriber base of VIL shrank by nearly 2.7 million, it said.
ICICI Securities noted that successful subscribers have regained Bharti Airtel’s market leader spot.
On an overall basis, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) details, Airtel added 3.6 million new customers in October, raising its total wireless customer base to 330.3 million in October 2020.
Reliance Jio, which added a total of 2.22 million new mobile subscribers, followed Airtel, bringing its total user base to 406.3 million during that month. On an overall basis, Vodafone Idea Ltd and state-owned BSNL and MTNL announced a subscriber base loss.
