The Facebook Oversight Board upholds Trump’s ban and calls for further investigation

Facebook’s independent oversight board upheld the platform’s ban on former US President Donald Trump but called for a six-month re-examination of the situation.

Trump’s remarks about his supporters’ rampage at the US Capitol on January 6 “created an atmosphere where a significant risk of violence was possible,” according to the board, whose recommendations are binding on the leading social network.

“Given the gravity of the violations and the continued risk of abuse,” the board concluded, “Facebook was justified in suspending Mr. Trump’s accounts on January 6 and extending the suspension on January 7.”

The panel, however, stated that “it was not sufficient for Facebook to impose the indefinite and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension,” and demanded that Facebook “review this matter to assess and justify a proportionate response” within six months.

In its written opinion, the review board said, “It is not appropriate for Facebook to hold a user off the site for an indefinite period of time with no conditions for when or when the account will be restored.”
