The Prime Minister congratulates Mamata ‘Didi’ and promises that “The Centre will continue to help Bengal”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and promised that the Centre will “continue to extend all possible support to the West Bengal Government to fulfill people’s expectations and also to resolve the COVID-19 pandemic.” He thanked the people of Bengal for their “blessing” to the BJP, citing the party’s gains in a state where it had only a minor presence.

PM Modi tweeted, “From a marginal presence earlier, BJP’s presence has dramatically increased,” as his party, which had hoped to win 200 of Bengal’s 294 seats, appears to have won only 70 or so. The Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee is expected to win more seats than the 211 seats it secured in 2016.

PM Modi congratulated the Chief Minister just hours after some of his party’s leaders, including Union Minister Rajnath Singh, expressed their best wishes to him.

In another tweet, the Prime Minister — who addressed more than 50 meetings as part of the BJP’s Mission Bengal – said:

Since taking power at the Centre in 2014, the BJP has been working to extend its presence in eastern India. The state unit of the BJP was given a 200-seat target by then-BJP leader Amit Shah in 2015. However, although the BJP has been able to gain control of the northeastern states over the years, Bengal has remained elusive.

Many in the party have been disappointed, particularly after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP won 18 of the state’s 42 Lok Sabha seats, up from two previously.
Babul Supriyo, on the other hand, was the only leader who did not congratulate her.

Mr. Supriyo, whose Asansol seat had been a BJP stronghold long before 2019, said Bengal’s voters had made a “historic mistake” in a short, angry Facebook post.

“Neither will I congratulate Mamata Banerjee… nor do I wish to say I ‘respect’ the people’s verdict… sincerely think people of Bengal made a historic mistake by not giving BJP a chance… by electing this corrupt, incapable, dishonest government and a cruel lady back to power,” his message read.
